The Future of Work: The Place for People in an Increasingly Digital Economy

Digital Disruption is reshaping many industries and advancing the frontiers of automation in many business processes. There are widespread, sometimes lurid, accounts of how the very essence of work is changing. This talk firstly reviews the five main reasons why businesses need to embrace automation, which then leads on to the logical question: what happens to the people whose work becomes automated? A brief review of the history of work contextualises the current waves of change in the workplace, and an overview of a future architecture of work is presented. A summary of an extensive literature review of the impact automation on jobs - globally and in South Africa - frames the challenges this poses to business, society and individuals. Some practical approaches for individuals to respond are suggested, with a focus on personal and organisational change dynamics.
